Great Stirrup Cay Guide: What’s New in 2026
Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, has changed a lot.
If you’ve been here before, this may not feel like the same simple beach day you remember. Norwegian is putting serious money into the island, and on my early 2026 visit, some of the biggest changes were already open, including the new pier, the Great Life Lagoon pool, the kids’ splash area, and the adults-only Vibe Shore Club.
I also made a full video walkthrough of the island, which is worth watching if you want to see how the new layout actually works from the moment you walk off the ship.

The video gives you a full visual walkthrough of the pier, welcome area, pool, beach, food spots, bars, activities, and a sneak peek at Vibe Shore Club.
Quick Verdict: Is Great Stirrup Cay Better Now?
Yes, Great Stirrup Cay feels like a much stronger private-island stop than it used to, mostly because of the new pier and pool area.
The biggest improvement is that ships can now dock directly at the island, at least based on my visit, which removes the old tendering headache that could eat up a lot of your beach day. The new Great Life Lagoon pool also gives the island a more resort-style feel.
That said, parts of the island still felt like a work in progress, and some extras can get expensive. Great Stirrup Cay is better than before, but you still need to plan your day.
The New Pier Changes Everything
The biggest change to Great Stirrup Cay is the pier.
In the past, visiting Great Stirrup Cay meant tendering from the ship to the island. That could be slow, weather-dependent, and frustrating if you were stuck waiting for your turn to get ashore.
On my visit, we were able to walk directly off the ship, which made the day much easier. The pier still felt a little rough around the edges, but it was clear that construction and improvements were still underway.
Near the end of the pier, you’ll find the new welcome area. This is also a good spot to pause and get photos of your ship before heading deeper into the island.
From there, you can either take a tram or walk across the new footbridge toward the main beach and pool area. The walk took about 10 minutes and was easy enough, but the tram is helpful if you want to save steps or have mobility concerns.
What’s New Near the Arrival Area
Once you reach the main part of the island, you’ll start seeing the mix of old and new.
One of the first new areas is the kids’ splash zone, which gives younger cruisers a dedicated place to cool off and play. It is not the same as a full waterpark, but it is a nice family-friendly addition.
Norwegian has also talked about future additions, including the Great Tides Waterpark. If that opens as planned, it could make the island feel even more competitive with other cruise line private destinations.
For now, the main new attraction is the pool.
Great Life Lagoon: The New Pool at Great Stirrup Cay
The Great Life Lagoon is the biggest addition to Great Stirrup Cay. It is a large oceanfront pool with loungers, daybeds, and two swim-up bars.
The area is complimentary, which is important. You do not need to pay extra just to use the pool.
There are zero-entry areas at both ends, which should make the pool easier to access for many guests. Around the pool, you’ll also find plenty of loungers and places to sit.
The swim-up bars are a big part of the appeal, but there are also nearby bars if you do not want to get in the water. On my visit, the pool water was cold, so keep that in mind if you are visiting earlier in the year or on a cooler day.
Around the pool are cabanas and daybeds available to rent. Pricing can vary a lot by sailing, date, and size, so check your cruise planner before assuming a specific price.
The Beach Is Still the Main Attraction
Even with the new pool, Great Stirrup Cay is still a beach day.
The complimentary beach area is large, sandy, and lined with loungers and palm trees. On my visit, there were two ships at the island, and there was still plenty of seating available.
That surprised me in a good way.
You can rent a clamshell or umbrella if you want extra shade, but you do not need to pay just to enjoy the beach. The soft sand, clear water, and classic private-island feel are still here.
If your main goal is a simple, included beach day, Great Stirrup Cay can still deliver that.
What Food Is Included at Great Stirrup Cay?
There are several lunch options on the island.
The main food location is Jumbey Bar and Grill, which serves a buffet-style lunch with items like jerk chicken, burgers, and pizza.
There are also smaller food options, including Tropic Like It’s Hot, a food-truck-style spot with sandwiches and desserts, and Abaco Taco, which serves quick tacos and nachos. You may also find hot dog carts around the island.
This is not fine dining, but for a private-island beach day, there are enough included options to make lunch easy.
Bars and Drinks: Check Your Package Before You Sail
There are several bars around Great Stirrup Cay, including Bacardi Bar, Sand Bar, Patron Tequila Bar, Tiki Zoom stands, and the swim-up bars at the pool.
The biggest thing to know is that lines can be an issue. If you see a shorter line, it may be worth grabbing a drink then instead of waiting until everyone else has the same idea.
Also, double-check your beverage package before you sail. Norwegian has been changing how drink packages work on Great Stirrup Cay, so your onboard drink package may or may not apply on the island depending on your sailing date and package type.
That is something I would verify directly with NCL before your cruise.
What Costs Extra at Great Stirrup Cay?
A lot is included at Great Stirrup Cay, but there are also plenty of extras.
Some of the most common upcharges include:
Cabanas
Daybeds
Clamshells or umbrellas
Snorkel gear rentals
Paddle boards
Float mats
Zip lines
Wave runners
Swimming with the pigs
Vibe Shore Club
Some drinks, depending on your package and sailing date
You do not need to buy extras to have a good day, but it is worth checking prices before you go.
Activities Beyond the Beach and Pool
If you do not want to just sit by the water all day, there are a few other things to do.
You can rent snorkel gear or bring your own from home. You can rent paddle boards or float mats. There are also putting greens, shops, a small vendor market, beach volleyball, table tennis, and zip lines.
The zip lines are probably the most noticeable paid activity on the island. You can usually book ahead or purchase on the island if space is available.
For most people, I would treat Great Stirrup Cay as a flexible beach and pool day, then add one activity if it really interests you.
Vibe Shore Club: Adults-Only Upcharge Area
One of the newest additions is Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only upcharge area on Great Stirrup Cay. This is separate from the onboard Vibe Beach Club.
The island version is designed as a quieter, more exclusive space with upgraded loungers, umbrellas, dedicated food service, and its own bar setup. Capacity is limited, so it can sell out.
On my visit, the area still felt a little incomplete, and pricing can vary by sailing. I would not book it blindly without comparing the price to what you’re actually getting on your specific cruise.
I have a separate full review of Vibe Shore Club, so I’d recommend watching or reading that before deciding whether it is worth the extra money.
Best For and Skip If
Great Stirrup Cay is best for cruisers who want an easy beach day, a big included pool, casual food, and the convenience of walking directly off the ship instead of tendering.
It is also a better fit now for families, especially with the new splash area and future waterpark plans.
You may want to skip the paid extras if you are happy with the included beach and pool areas. You may also want to be cautious with Vibe Shore Club if the price is high on your sailing or if you do not need a quieter adults-only area.
Final Verdict
Great Stirrup Cay is moving in a much more ambitious direction.
The new pier makes the day easier. The Great Life Lagoon pool gives the island a more resort-style feel. The beach is still strong. The food options are easy enough. And Vibe Shore Club adds a quieter paid option for adults who want to avoid the busiest areas.
But it is still a work in progress, and some of the extras can add up quickly.
My advice is simple: enjoy what’s included first, price out any upgrades carefully, and check the latest NCL policies before your sailing.
